Cowslips

A short walk

I went for a short walk not far from home yesterday. I took detour initially along the lane towards the chicken farm which I didn’t really want to do but was necessary. It was worth it though as I was rewarded with this…

Cowslips
Beautiful wildflowers

Cowslips
Cowslips in the verge.

…Cowslips! Just two clumps growing in the verge. I haven’t seen them there before. I also saw a hare but it zipped of to quickley for me to take a photo. I only took my phone with me this time and I knew I wouldn’t be able to unlock it fast enough to get a picture.

I also saw this…

Silene dioica
Red campion

…Silene dioica, Red Campion. This was growing on the bank of a ditch along a field boundary. Its amazing how quickly things grow with just a few degrees more warmth. Although, it has been quite cool of late here. Even though the sun has warmth the the wind has been quite chilly. Its been blowing from the East and South East for a while. The other night there was a frost. The temperature went down to about 2 degrees and our potatoes suffered frost damage. We have been eagerly watching and wating for them to pop up for weeks. Searching the bed for the first hint of a leaf which are so hard to spot against the dark soil. Having grown about 10cm above the surface they now have got to grow again as they are all damaged and droopy. We have now covered them up with some fleece just to give them some help. I thought spuds were quite robust but I guess the stems are quite fleshy. The leaves are new and tender when they are young, as they get more mature they will probably harden off. Nevermind well have to go back to watching and waiting.
